Why Stand Alone Cleanses Won't Heal At The Root Cause: Understanding Your Internal Terrain

Aug 05, 2025

There's a lot of noise out there when it comes to detoxing - 30 day parasite cleanses, celery juices, fasting, liver cleansing & supplements that promise a quick fix solution. And while I'm all for a well timed protocol, here's the truth that often gets left out of the conversation: if you don't address your internal terrain first, those cleanses will only get you so far.

Let's rewind a bit.

Back in the 19th century, French biologist Antione Béchamp introduced something called the terrain theory. It's a theory that resonates deeply with me and underpins the root cause healing work I guide women through today. Unlike the germ theory, which pins disease on external endeavours like bacteria and viruses, terrain theory shifts the focus inward. It suggests that it's not just the 'bugs' themselves that cause disease, but the condition of the body they're entering.

When our terrain, our internal environment, is strong, balanced and supported, harmful organisms and microbes are far less likely to take hold. but if the body is run down, toxic, and nutrient depleted, it creates a perfect breeding ground for them to thrive and survive. Think of it like this: mosquitos only swarm around stagnant water, not a flowing river. The same goes for pathogens and a sluggish, overwhelmed system.

Now this is where a lot of people get stuck. They turn to a 30 day parasite cleanse or restrictive diet hoping it'll be the silver bullet for their fatigue, skin issues, bloating and chronic candida. And maybe for a moment, they do feel better. But then? the symptoms creep back in. That's because the underlying terrain wasn't truly addressed and on the surface was skimmed and bandaid put on.

You wouldn't remediate black mould in a house by painting over it and calling it a day, right? you'd dig into the structure, find the leaks, add more ventilation and fix the root cause, so the mould doesn't come back with avengeance, (even though sadly many don't fix it this way) well your body works the same way!

I like to use the "house analogy" here. The visible symptoms - acne, bloating, fatigue, anxiety, are like cracks in the wall or mould stains on the ceiling. They're clues, but they're not the root issue. A quick fix cleanse might slap on some fresh paint, but unless you reinforce the foundations (aka terrain), those cracks will return.

That's why I always teach: don't just focus on the invaders. Focus on the environment that allowed them in.

Cleanses, when done intentionally and at the right time periodically, are valuable, but they're not a starting point. They're part of a much bigger picture. In fact, jumping into a cleanse too quickly can make things worse. I've seen it when people push through herbal cleansing protocols without opening their elimination pathways first. and what happens? They feel much worse. because instead of releasing toxins the body just reabsorbs them and the cycle continues.

imagine trying to empty a dirty sink without unclogging the drain. You just end up with the same mess, cycling through.

So what does it actually look like to prepare the terrain?

First, we support the body's natural detoxification systems: the liver, kidneys, colon, lymph, skin, lungs. These are our inbuilt cleaning crew, working around the clock. But thanks to chronic stress, nutrient deficiencies and constant exposure to environmental toxins (hello mould, microplastics, fragrances, chemtrails, pesticides, fluoride......) these organs are struggling to cope and need our help!

I always start with the foundations, because you can't build good health without a strong foundation, this looks like lowering your toxic load, deep hydration and remineralisation, lymph support, lowering your inflammation with diet (because you can't heal in an inflamed state) nervous system regulation because healing doesn't happen in fight or flight either.

Then and only then we go deeper and layer in the colon, because if you're not eliminating waste properly, everything else backs up. We focus on kidneys, liver, parasites, heavy metals, mould and further cleansing. By this point your body is better equipped to release, process and rebuild.

I also love the "rain barrel" analogy. Picture a bug bucket sitting in your yard. Every day, it catches a little more rain, some from pesticides in your food, some from emotional stress, maybe even from hidden mould in your home. At first, you don't notice. But over time, the barrel gets fuller and fuller.... until one day it overflows. That overflow? That's when symptoms start showing up.

But the key is this: the overflowing didn't start that day - it was building for years.

Root cause healing is about slowly emptying that barrel. not all at once. Not with a 30 day cleanse. But steady, sustainable changes that rebuild your terrain from the inside out.

And let me be clear, this isn't about chasing symptoms or striving for some kind of perfect "clean " body. It's about building resilience and giving your body what it needs to do what it already knows how to do: detox and heal.

One of the biggest misconceptions in the wellness world is that detox is a one time thing. But the truth is, we're constantly detoxing, whether we support it or not. cleanses are helpful if they are used strategically. but they're not a magic fix, and they can't compensate for the terrain that is depleted, congested, or chronically inflamed.

So if you're someone who's done all the right things - cut sugar, did a parasite cleanse, drank the celery juice, but you're still not feeling vibrant in your body, I want to invite you to zoom out.

- Have I opened up my pathways?

- Am I supporting my nervous system, or running on cortisol?

- Have I addressed the environmental toxins in my home?

- Am I nourished - truly nourished?

This work is not glamorous. it's not a quick fix. but it's what creates lasting transformation. And once your foundation is solid, everything else becomes easier.

If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, know that you're not alone. This is why I do what I do, to guide women like you through this journey of root cause healing. With the right tools, knowledge and support, so that you can feel empowered in your body again.
