Terrain, sequence and depth - why healing has to be looked at differently
Jul 21, 2026
There are three words that explain why so many healing approaches create progress that does not hold.
Terrain, sequence and depth.
These words matter because they change the way we look at the body. Instead of asking what will get rid of a symptom as quickly as possible, they ask what conditions created the symptom, what order the body needs support in, and whether the work has gone deep enough to create a result that can actually hold.
Terrain is the internal environment of the body.
It is the state of the gut, liver, lymph, nervous system, minerals, cells, microbiome, drainage pathways, toxic load and overall capacity of the system.
When the terrain is clean, nourished, regulated and functioning well, the body has more capacity to repair and restore. When the terrain is toxic, congested, depleted, inflamed or overwhelmed, symptoms can appear as the body tries to adapt to those conditions.
This is why symptoms are not random.
They are communication from the body.
The skin may flare because the body is trying to eliminate through the skin. Digestion may become reactive because the gut environment is inflamed, depleted or imbalanced. Energy may crash because the body is using so much capacity just to keep functioning. Hormones may feel chaotic because the liver, gut, nervous system and mineral balance are all under pressure.
The symptom is not the starting point.
The terrain is.
Then comes sequence.
The order matters because the body responds differently depending on what is introduced and when. The right thing at the wrong time can still create the wrong outcome.
A supplement introduced into a body that cannot absorb properly may do very little.
A detox introduced before drainage is open can overwhelm the system.
Gut work done while the nervous system is still in survival mode may stall because digestion is not being prioritised.
Targeting parasites, Candida or other organisms before the terrain has changed may create short-term results that do not hold.
This is why healing needs a sequence.
Not random action. Not doing everything at once. Not jumping from one protocol to another every time something stops working.
The body needs capacity to be built before deeper work can hold. It needs foundations. It needs drainage. It needs nourishment. It needs safety. It needs the right work, in the right order.
Then there is depth.
Depth is the difference between improvement and resolution.
Improvement is real, and it matters. The bloating settles. The skin calms. The energy lifts. The sleep improves. The body feels lighter. That progress shows that the body can respond, and that should never be dismissed.
But resolution is different.
Resolution is when the internal environment has changed enough that the body no longer needs the symptom in the same way.
That does not usually happen from a one-off protocol or a few weeks of support. It happens when the right work is done in the right order for long enough to create a result that holds.
This is where so many people get stuck.
They experience improvement and think they have found the answer. Then the symptom returns, and they assume the body has failed again.
But often, the body did respond. The work simply did not go deep enough, or the sequence was not complete enough, for the result to hold.
Terrain explains why the symptom appeared.
Sequence explains why the order changes the outcome.
Depth explains why short-term improvement is not the same as lasting resolution.
When you look at the body through those three lenses, healing starts to make sense in a completely different way.
The question is no longer, “What can I take for this symptom?”
The question becomes, “What conditions need to change so my body no longer needs to express this symptom?”
That is a very different level of healing, because it stops treating the body as though it is broken and starts recognising that it is responding intelligently to the environment it is living in.
When the environment changes, the body can change with it.
