Non-Toxic Living on a Budget

lifestyle Jul 29, 2025

Living a low-toxic life can sometimes feel overwhelming and out of reach, especially when you begin to think about the cost of replacing non-stick pans, getting a water filter, sourcing organic food, or switching to natural clothing. For many it feels like this kind of lifestyle is only for those with a big budget, particularly with the rising costs of living we're all experiencing. But the truth is non-toxic living doesn’t have to be expensive, and you don’t need to change everything all at once. Start small. Choose one area that matters most to you right now, maybe it’s the food you eat, the water you drink, or what you use to clean your home. Every small step you take makes a difference and will benefit your health in the long run.

Clean Water:

There are all sorts of filtration options out there ranging from under the sink systems to countertop distillers, and even whole-house filters. These can vary in price, but you don’t need to invest in the most expensive model to make a meaningful change. Some companies offer sign-up discounts or referral savings, so it’s worth doing a little research. Water is essential to our wellbeing but sadly the quality of our tap water isn’t always ideal. In the UK, many of the water pipes are outdated and some older homes still have lead piping. On top of that, chemicals like chlorine and even traces of antibiotics from farm runoff have been found in our water systems. You can check your local water quality at www.water.org.uk  to better understand what’s coming out of your tap. Starting with what your budget will allow right now to help reduce your exposure.

Food Choices:

A common assumption is that eating organic is always too expensive but with a little creativity, it can be more manageable. Companies like Abel & Cole, Riverford, and Ocado offer organic fruit and veg boxes at different price points. Well Easy is another option, especially for pantry staples, herbs, and natural snacks. There is a small annual fee, but you could share the membership with a friend or family member to split the cost. It’s not about going 100% organic overnight. A useful approach is to start by prioritising the “Dirty Dozen” — a list of the most pesticide heavy fruits and vegetables.

Buying these organic where possible makes a bigger impact. PAN UK (Pesticide Action Network) shares great resources on this. You could also look at cooking with more nourishing fats like tallow, butter, or coconut oil instead of processed seed oils, which are commonly found in cheaper packaged foods and ready meals. These swaps are doable and often cost-neutral once you stop buying the less nourishing items.

Cleaning Products:

This is an area where non-toxic living can save you money. Many of the products under your kitchen sink can be swapped out with simple ingredients like vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, and lemon. One of my favourite cleaning blends is made using leftover citrus peels—lemon or orange work well. Just soak the peels in white vinegar and water (about a 50/50 ratio) for 24 hours, strain, and pour into a spray bottle. It’s natural, smells great, and is incredibly effective for general cleaning around the kitchen and bathroom.

Bicarbonate of soda is a must-have in the non-toxic home. It’s brilliant for scrubbing sinks, removing odours, cleaning toilets, and even freshening up carpets. Castile soap is another versatile product that lasts ages and can be used for dishes, floors, or even body wash. And don’t underestimate the power of the sun.  On dry sunny days put your pillows or duvet outside for a sun bath. The UV rays naturally kill dust mites, mildew and odour-causing bacteria, leaving your bedding fresh. It’s completely free and incredibly effective.

Everyday Foods & Herbs

When people think about “detoxing,” they often picture expensive supplements or juice cleanses, but the truth is, your body is already detoxing every day. It’s just about supporting those natural processes with what you already have. Simple foods like garlic, ginger, lemon, and leafy greens help support the liver and digestive system. A warm mug of lemon water in the morning is a gentle ritual that costs pennies. Adding grated ginger to meals, sipping on peppermint tea, or using garlic in your cooking all contribute to this gentle daily support.

Herbs like nettle, dandelion leaf, burdock, and peppermint have been used for centuries to support the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system. They’re often available in loose-leaf form or as affordable teabags. Making a pot of herbal tea and sipping throughout the day is one of the easiest and most calming ways to support your body on a budget.

Home Environment:

When it comes to your home environment, there are many simple changes that can be made for very little to no cost.  Turning off your wifi at night so not to be absorbing unnecessary EMF’s, trying to go to bed earlier and creating a relaxing evening routine.  This could be turning off any screens an hour or two before you go to bed in the evening, getting a relaxing Epsom salt bath with some lavender essential oil.

Plants are another great addition to your home environment.  If like me, this is a new area for you, maybe start of with a snake plant or spider plant.  Spider plants are great at cleaning up the environment of toxins, plus when they grow babies this is then free plants you can pot and add around your home and snake plants are hardy and great at filtering indoor air.

The most important thing to remember is that non-toxic living isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about making conscious, informed choices wherever you can and being kind to yourself in the process. You don’t have to throw away everything you own or spend hundreds to live more naturally. Replace things slowly as they run out. Do your research, ask questions, and build habits that feel good to you and your budget.
