How chronic inflammation slows detox and keeps symptoms going
Apr 07, 2026
To begin, one must ask the question - what is inflammation?
I think when we hear the word inflammation, we automatically assume it’s a bad thing, and although nowadays, with the lifestyles we live and the environments we are exposed to, it can feel like we cannot avoid the negative effects of it… inflammation in a body that is functioning as it should is actually a really healthy, natural response to certain stressors.
An example of this would be cold water immersion. This has become very popular in recent years due to how effective it is at supporting inflammation in the body. It works by putting your body into a stressful situation, creating a natural inflammatory response. But through deep breathing and mindset, you signal to the body that it is safe. In response, the body relaxes, blood vessels dilate, and more oxygen is pumped around the system.
Practices like these, where we place ourselves into controlled stress, are fantastic at supporting our health and improving our natural response to inflammation. This is exactly how our bodies have been designed to function.
Another way to understand inflammation is to imagine your body as a house, with an alarm system for intruders.
On any day, we encounter many intruders - toxins, heavy metals, plastics, EMFs, parasites, PFAS, parabens and more. When these enter our system, the alarm goes off. This signals the body’s natural and healthy response to come in, remove, clean up and repair any damage that has been caused. Once this is done, we return to homeostasis, and balance is restored.
Where the issue lies is that most people today are living with chronic inflammation.
This means the alarm goes off because of an intruder, the body then begins its process of removing, cleaning and repairing… but before the job is finished, another intruder enters. So the body sends in another response team. Then before that job is complete, another intruder appears - and the cycle continues.
Eventually, there is no down time. The repair jobs never fully complete.
This is when the body becomes chronically inflamed - the cycle never ceases.
When the body is in this state, it is no longer thriving as it should. It is simply trying to survive. And the longer we remain in this state, the greater the likelihood of developing a range of chronic conditions.
Detox pathways are the systems through which our bodies naturally eliminate waste and toxins. These include the colon, kidneys, liver, lymphatic system, and skin.
The liver and kidneys process what the body deems waste, the colon eliminates it, the lymphatic system helps transport it, and the skin can release toxins through sweat.
For the body to function optimally, these pathways need to be open, supported, and working efficiently.
However, when the system is overburdened with chronic inflammation, these pathways begin to slow down and become sluggish. When elimination is impaired like this, waste and toxins are not removed efficiently from the body.
This is where the problem deepens.
The very things causing inflammation - toxins, parasites, microplastics, heavy metals, environmental chemicals etc. are the same things that need to be eliminated. But when detox pathways are not functioning properly, these substances begin to accumulate.
This creates a cycle of inflammation slowing detox so then toxins build up and therefore more inflammation is created.
Over time, this burden on the body can manifest as chronic symptoms such as fatigue, digestive issues, skin conditions, hormonal imbalances, and more serious chronic illness.
Many people respond to these symptoms by reaching for anti-inflammatory medications or supplements. And whilst these can offer temporary relief, they do not address the root cause.
If the underlying toxic burden remains, the body will continue to produce inflammation. The symptoms may subside temporarily, but often return - sometimes more intensely.
This is why detox is such an essential part of supporting long-term health.
To truly address inflammation at its root, we must begin to reduce the toxic load on the body - both internally and externally. This means not only avoiding exposure where possible, but also supporting the body in safely eliminating what has already accumulated.
There are specific ways to open and support detox pathways so that elimination can occur safely and effectively, and this is the work we do as detox practitioners.
Through supporting drainage pathways, colon health, kidney and liver function, parasite and heavy metal protocols, lymphatic movement, gut healing, and environmental awareness, we reduce the overall burden on the body.
As a result, inflammation begins to settle, detox pathways function more efficiently, and the body can return to a state of homeostasis - where it is able to thrive
This modality is no longer a luxury for those who simply enjoy it - it has become a necessity.
The world we live in today is very different to how it was 50 years ago. We are constantly exposed to ultra-processed foods, herbicides, pesticides, heavy metals, microplastics, parasites and countless synthetic chemicals. Combined with chronic stress and fast-paced lifestyles, this places a significant burden on the body.
Now more than ever, it is essential to support the body through detox practices that keep these pathways open, supported and functioning.
If we want to truly thrive, we must begin by reducing our toxic load, supporting our detox pathways, and addressing the root cause of chronic inflammation, which creates the conditions for what our bodies have been designed to do – self heal.
The body is not broken, it is overburdened.
Return the body to balance and it will return to health.
